Mineral Makeup Application Tips
Flawless mineral makeup application starts with good skincare.
Lillian Skincare mineral makeup contains no chemicals, fillers, talc or oils that will clog your pores and irritate your skin. Our makeup is highly pigmented, so a little goes a long way. One of the most important details about mineral makeup is that it is NOT at all like traditional makeup. One of the largest differences is that you need much less mineral makeup to get the same coverage you would get from regular makeup. The key is to start with a very small amount and apply in sheer layers until the desired amount of coverage is achieved.
* We recommend using a light moisturizer to “prime” your skin for perfect coverage. After applying your moisturizer, make sure it has completely penetrated the skin before applying your makeup.
* Tap a small amount of mineral foundation into the lid of your foundation jar or onto a makeup palette.
* For concealer: There is no need for an additional concealer. Your mineral foundation will double as both foundation and concealer. Swirl your concealer brush into the powder and “work” the powder into the brush. If you pick up too much foundation, tap lightly on the side of the lid to remove any excess. Gently “dot” or “dab” onto any problem areas such as dark circles and blemishes.
* To apply foundation: Again, tap a small amount of mineral powder into the lid of the jar or a makeup palette. Using your foundation brush, swirl into the powder, really working the foundation into the brush. Tap off any excess powder (this will keep you from getting a dry, chalky look). Apply the foundation in a circular or upward motion. As is true with any cosmetic application, you do not want to pull or drag your skin in a downward motion.
For sheer or light coverage, apply 1-2 light “layers”
For heavier coverage, apply a few more layers. Remember that several light layers are better than one heavy layer. You want to maintain a fresh, light look.
If you prefer a cream foundation, it is easy to convert Lillian Skincare mineral foundation into a liquid. You can add a drop of your favorite lotion, face cream or serum to the foundation that you’ve tapped into the lid. We prefer to use a taklon brush (such as our concealer brush) to apply liquid foundation. If you do not have a taklon brush, you can mix the foundation in the palm of your clean hand and apply with your fingers or a makeup sponge.
* Do not apply foundation with or over a heavy petroleum based product or heavy cream. It can become thick and cakey.
After the desired coverage is achieved, continue application of blush, eye shadow and other desired makeup.
To set your foundation, give your face a light dusting of our Mineral Finishing Powder. Apply in the same fashion as your mineral foundation, with the same brush.
Troubleshooting
Your foundation looks too chalky, heavy or mask-like: This is likely due to over-application or perhaps the color is too light. Try blending with a slightly darker shade and remember to apply in light layers.
Your skin looks too dry: The surface of your skin could be too dry and needs exfoliation. Gently exfoliate your skin by using a facial scrub or a facial loofah type sponge. Apply a good moisturizer before application. You may want to try mixing the foundation with the moisturizer and apply as a liquid foundation.
Your skin looks too oily or shiny: Your moisturizer could be too heavy for your skin type. Since mineral makeup is completely different than traditional liquid foundation, it tends to be less drying, therefore you may not need as heavy a moisturizer as before. You might try “priming” your face with a light dusting of Mineral Finishing Powder, then apply the foundation on top. The finishing powder will help absorb the extra oils in your skin.
Your pores appear larger or your fine lines and wrinkles are more noticeable: This usually comes from over-application. Some people feel like they need to “fill” their pores or fine lines by paying special attention to them and applying too much makeup in efforts to get rid of them. Less is more (more often than not). Also try applying a “final layer” of Mineral Finishing Powder.
Your makeup looks blotchy, streaked or uneven: This is likely due to too heavy a moisturizer or over-application. Make sure that the moisturizer has completely penetrated the skin before applying the foundation. If this doesn’t work, try experimenting with different moisturizers. You may not need as heavy a moisturizer as you did with your traditional foundation.
